My new Macbook isn't letting me sign in

I have recently bought a new macbook pro. I've forgotten the username I used to sign in to it so have tried resetting my apple id to do it that way but for some reason it's not working. Every time I try to do so it just says There was an error connecting to the Apple ID Server. I've managed to reset my apple ID on my iphone, but for some reason just can;t do it on my mac. Its as though it doesn;t recognise the wifi, even though the wifi is connected and running correctly.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

The most trouble free way to move to a new machine, is using the Setup Assistant on the initial boot of a brand new machine— you have one shot here. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205749

The second best way is use the Migration Assistant.
