Log Into https://appleid.apple.com/ with Apple ID and Password. The devices associated with this Apple ID will be listed and include to device serial number
Since you are able to log into these Forums on some type of device, one can go to the https://appleid.apple.com and log in there and retrieve the serial number.
If that is not the is required then suggest taking the Second Habd Apple Computer back to the person from whom one purchased the computer and have them perform the following

Thank you I forgot to mention that it is a second hand mac so no package or serial number on stand so can't even get number off screen

Sorry I can not even get to sign in stage it will only load as far as recovery stage when I try and download it says not enough free space or not able to download load try again
