Trojan virus text from Apple security

Today a friend rec'd a text on her iphone that appeared to be from Apple Security saying "important notice-your device is currently infected with a Trojan virus. Your phone's memory is already having 17% of damage. Prompt action is required, otherwise your device will become defective and all your data including accounts, photos and payment data will be available to third parties. Immediately install the trusted app from the App store to remove the virus and secure the device."

I advised her not to do anything, thinking it was a scam--was I right to do that?

What is the best solution going forward once you receive a text like this--just delete the text, reset phone? Is there a way to block the source of the text?

As Kurt stated, it is a scam. The purpose of the message is to play on your fears so you will follow the instructions and install an app that could actually do some damage, since the message itself can’t damage the device.

First red flag: Apple doesn’t send such messages.. ever.

Second red flag: There is no such thing as a “Trojan virus”; there are Trojans and there are viruses and each have very different goals and payloads. The fact that the message warns of a “Trojan virus” proves that the sender has no idea what they’re doing.

Third red flag: Apple doesn’t work toward intentionally creating fear and panic for its users.
