Not required, but it's a good idea especially for iOS updates, which can take a long time and can get corrupted if it powers off during the process. At least some iPhones required at least a 50% charge level to complete a Wi-Fi iOS update. Not so important for App Store updates that are fairly quick, which can be interrupted and retried later.

I would recommend doing iOS updates via a computer whenever possible. That takes care of the power issue since the computer will supply power. It also performs a backup before the update installation starts. App Store updates can only be done through Wi-Fi (or maybe 5G?) though. But if you can it never hurts to connect it to power.
