how do i get microsoft office on my mac so i can use the one time activation code i have

What version of Office and what macOS version is on the Mac?
Remember that older versions of Office (2011 and older) do not run on macOS 10.15 "Catalina" or higher, and it appears Microsoft have taken down their activation servers for old Office versions. It is very possible that you could not reinstall some versions even with a valid code.
