A photo that I double clicked on from messages will not disappear from my MacBook screen.

When in Messages if you tap on a photo and press the space bar it brings up "preview" and the only way I found to get rid of it is to press the space bar again. This is one of those things I learned from doing.
What happens when you press the space bar?
