Domain Naming Services.

Basically it is the Internet and local network's "phone book." Each computer or device that is on a network has an IP address. DNS translates those IP addresses into hostnames so that you and your browser can understand them. When your computer goes to a web address like apple.com, your computer is actually going to the computer's IP address that DNS says apple.com is at. Since there are countless devices on the Internet or a large network, remembering an IP address for a certain site or computer can be daunting if not near impossible. DNS makes it easy so you can put in google.com or apple.com in your browser and it will take you there. Also if your browsing your local network you can see hostnames like a server name or workstation and know what it is.

Basically like a phone book, you look up a name and it give you the number for that name.
