Use Safari to download macOS on your Mac
Safari uses these links to find the old installers in the App Store. After you download the installer from the App Store, the installer opens automatically.

How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support
Did you try clicking on a link under the header,
Use Safari to download macOS on your Mac
Thanks, I did click this link. My issue is, I can't see any sign that I could click to start the download. See my screenshot... The only clickable things here are "Mac App Store" that takes me to Monterey page and "Apple" that takes me to Apple App store with only Monterey icon available among all mac OS versions.
My mac is theoretically compatible with Big Sur (MacBook Air 13-inch, early 2015 with Sierra 10.12.6 on it). But when I check for updates through SystemPreferences, it shows No App Updates Available :(. I guess I need to visit a local Apple store here.
Did you use Safari? Other browsers generally do not work to do this.
If you did use Safari, clear all history, then close Safari. And then it wouldn't be a bad idea to also do a full restart. Then try downloading Big Sur again.
(BTW, since you're only on Sierra, you may have to upgrade to High Sierra first because that's the first version of macOS where APFS became available and there were also significant changes to firmware. Big Sur will require APFS.)
Yes, I used Safari (my only browser at the moment). Emptied Caches, cleared all history, cleaned up my mac, did a restart. No change so far.
Thank you for the advice to upgrade to High Sierra first, that's what I will probably do. However, the description of Big Sur says it can upgrade Sierra. Can my geographical location (outside the US) have something to do with it?
Safari may be blocking popups (blocking seems to be its default setting).
Check Safari > Preferences > Websites. In the left pane scroll down to Pop-Up Windows and select it. Make sure that When visiting other websites is set to Allow. (You may need to quit & reopen Safari to get the setting to stick.)
I can't see how to download it from this page (there's no download button or any sign of possible download):
If your Mac is compatible, open this link in Safari…
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-big-sur/id1526878132?mt=12
Does the intended computer qualify for the upgrade.
If this computer is Not Specifically listed - it does Not Qualify for the Big Sur upGrade
That page should open the App Store, and it should have an additional button to view in the App Store.
Are you sure your Mac can run Big Sur? The links in the section above have the requirements.
Nope. Link goes to software updater which says that macOS is unavailable.
