Please restart the computer in Safe Mode per the directions in the  How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support link.

Note: If you are using a wireless keyboard please either plug it in using the supplied Lightning cable that shipped with it. If you are using a legacy keyboard or a third-party keyboard that does not have re-charging abilities, please use any USB keyboard. Also note that a Safe Mode restart may require you to hold down the shift key for up to 5 minutes before the computer starts in Safe Mode. You will know it is in Safe Mode when you see “Safe Mode” in the upper right of the display.

Have spent considerable time with Apple senior advisor on this issue over the past few days. They've taken screen shots and uploaded technical data from my computer to Apple Engineering. Report from my call today is that Apple is aware of the issue from several different users and is currently working on a fix. They suggest keeping system updated with the latest release as they will push out a fix with a new release (didn't commit to when). There is nothing wrong with my MacBook Air M2 nor with the external USB mics (Sure MV5 and Rode USB). Senior advisor did suggest that as many users as possible should report the issue as the more technical data Apple Engineering has the better. As I require my external mic to work, I will continue to use 12.0.1 as my active boot (the last known stable release before this became a problem) and will continue to update my test boot that is on an external SSD. Will update that one and test to see if it's fixed. Will report if fixed.
