Automatic on head detection permanent turn off

Is it possible to permanently turn off on-head detection for airpod max pros? I've done it multiple times and it seems like neither my machine nor the headphones remember me turning it off.

Hi there, Howie,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. If we understand, you are having trouble disabling the Automatic Head Detection feature of your AirPods Max. We are happy to help!

First, make sure you are wearing your AirPods Max and they are connected to your device. Then, follow the steps below from Change audio settings for AirPods Max - Apple Support on how to adjust the settings on all of your devices. If you use the AirPods Max with more than one device, ensure to check the feature on all of them:

"Turn off Automatic Head Detection

Your AirPods Max automatically stop playing audio when you take them off, and resume playback when you put them back on. You can change this setting.

  1. Wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Go to Settings  > Bluetooth, then tap  next to your AirPods.
    • On Mac: Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Bluetooth, then click the Options button.

3. Turn Automatic Head Detection on or off."

If that is not working, restart your device(s) and try again.

Best!
