Airtag tracking question

Hello everyone.

I'm debating on getting an Apple Airtag to attach to my electric scooter as a safety precaution. I was doing some research and watching some videos and apparently, if someone steals my scooter (or whatever has the airtag attached to), they get a notification on their phone saying they're in possession of an apple airtag and then they're given an option to disable it. I understand this is a safety feature to avoid unwanted tracking/stalking, but I'm hoping someone can clear the air or give some insight. If someone steals my scooter, do they have the power to just disable my airtag preventing me from tracking it?

Thanks

Welcome iEsoteric,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you have some concerns about purchasing the AirTag.

It sounds like you are referring to this AirTag alert: What to do if you get an alert that an AirTag or Find My network accessory is with you

Under section, 'If you see an "Item Detected Near You" message'.

If an AirTag notifies the person and they are not the owner of the AirTag, they will receive this alert. They can disable tracking of the AirTag for their privacy. However, they cannot reset the AirTag or use it without the previous owner removing it from their account first.

As explained here: Add an AirTag in Find My on iPhone (Bottom of section, 'Add an AirTag'.)

We hope this explains a bit further about the feature and using the AirTag.

Wishing you well, take care.
