Can't Connect AirPods Pro to iPhone 12

I have followed the instructions -

open the case beside the iPhone's home screen

yes, I do have that small video of the rotating case and pods showing their respective charge percentages

but there's no connection option in the window

when I check the Bluetooth settings, it tells me that the AirPods Pro are not connected

there's the spinning gear beside the Other Devices label

Any thoughts on what I can do to connect these earbuds?

Single Device Connection:

You can only have your AirPods connected to a single device at a time. It cannot be connected to more than one device.

So, Remove these from the Mac:

  1. Click on: Bluetooth Preferences... on the bottom of the window.
  2. Right-Click: on the AirPods
  3. Select: Remove

Perhaps I didn't flesh out the situation fully in my first message.

I am sitting in front of my iMac and I have both my and the wife's iPhone in front of me.

What I want to do is to have the AirPods Pro operate with her phone and mine only.

As I sit here - the phone is connected (I think) to the iMac

Why it chose to connect to the iMac rather than one of our 2 phones - I don't know.

When I close the connection on the iMac by clicking on John's AirPods Pro, I would have thought that the AirPods would automatically then try to connect with one of the phones in front of me.

And this does happen to the extent that I see the 2 windows - Sandra's AirPods Pro on the wife's phone - John's AirPods Pro on my phone - but neither window gives me the option of connecting.

So I'm unable to use the AirPods with the iPhones. How can I get this problem solved?
