iPod and Beats Compatibility

Hey, I was wondering if the Beats Studio 3 were compatible with the IPod 6 and 7. On the beats compatibility site it says is is only compatible with “the iPhone 8 and higher” while on the apple site for the compatibility it says “compatible with all devices iOS 10 and higher”. Was wondering if it works with devices like the IPod 6 that only goes up to iOS 10.

Thanks!

iPod Touch (6th Gen)

That's incorrect, the current version of iOS for the 6th generation iPod Touch (on the day of writing this post) is iOS 12.5.5, not iOS 10.

However - there appear to be a few issues regarding compatibility: if I interpret the information on Apple's website correctly, you need an iCloud account and iOS 10, so the 6th generation iPod Touch will work. But if I look on the Beats by Dre site, that states that the Beats Studio 3 require the 7th generation Touch with the latest iOS version on it. The latest version of iOS (the current version) is iOS 15, which means that the 6th gen Touch will not work. Note that the 6th gen Touch cannot update to iOS 13 or later.

All I can suggest is that is that you visit an Apple store with your iPod and ask the staff if you can try the headphones so that you can test the compatibility. There is a compatibility page on Apple's website, but frankly, it's no more help than anywhere else that I've looked. See Beats by Dre product compatibility – Apple Support (UK)

On that Apple page, it mentions that you can use the 3.5mm headphone jack with the Beats and that this will provide "full compatibility". However (yet again), "fully compatible" does not mean that every function or feature will work. Apple even state on that same page that "functionality may vary by product".

I especially like (sarcasm) the mention almost everywhere, of the Apple W1 chip. That particular piece of information is an object lesson in how not to sell your product to the average person in the street. I would be amazed if the average person knows what Apple W1 chip means or whether it makes their product is compatible.

I'd say buyer beware. Be even more aware if you have the 6th gen Touch.

Something that I forgot to mention is that if you check a 6th gen Touch's Settings/General/Software Update, the message you see is "12.5.5 - Your software is up to date". If you use iTunes to check for updates to the 6th gen model iTunes will state "This version of the iPod software (12.5.5) is the current version".

Those somewhat misleading statements actually mean that the iPod is running the latest iOS for that model, which is not the same thing.

In both cases, it might help is the message had the additional text: "for this model" at the end of the sentence.
