restore keyboard defaults
When I press the slash key, the keyboard produces this -, question mark produces this _. What happened and how do I fix it_

You have got the wrong mapping active., Go to system preferences > keyboard > input sources and make sure there is ONLY ONE item on the list, and that the name of that item is US or ABC (and NOT Spanish or something else.

Yes, it is best to remove Spanish from the Input Sources list to make sure you don't accidentally activate it in the future. The right Input Source for English is called US or British or ABC.
Thank you. This solved the problem after simply selecting English but leaving Spanish on the list did not.
