Google maps only beeps on carplay

i have an iphone 12 ios14. Google maps only beeps instead of giving me voice directions (completely missing the point of using maps) when using Carplay. A beep when you’re on the road 2 meters from an intersection where there is a fork won’t do me any good considering you have to switch 4 lanes to get to where you want to go and it won’t even tell me right or left so I’d have to avert my eyes from the road. I’ve checked the maps voice settings and it is unmuted. I simply can’t tell what the issue is.
