how to identify my computer by serial number

Click on the Apple symbol at the top left corner of your monitor. Then click on"About this Mac". In Overview the last entry will be your serial number.

I don't think this answers the question. I have the serial number but don't have the computer open. Is there a place on the Apple web site that can tell me the model type if I give it the serial number?

I think it's safe to say that any Apple product sold in 2007 will have pretty much zero trade in value now.
