I have apple tv hardware on two tv's in my house. Does it require an apple tv subscription?

An Apple TV+ subscription is not strictly needed to use the Apple TV box.

An Apple TV+ subscription is for access to the Apple TV+ streaming service featuring Apple Originals. When you want to access other content, then the subscription has no benefit for that.
