I have a Macbook mid 2010 and I know high Sierra is the last os it can run. is it still usable foe web browsing, google docs, youtube, Netflix and just really basic stuff. or should I just install another os on here?

With due diligence, prudence and good computer practices on the Internet - one can still use High Sierra.
Though Safari is somewhat outdated and can not be upgraded - other compatible and Newer Browser can be used - like Brave without the Google baggage. Personally have used MS Edge on HS and works fine.
