Problem with Mail

I suddenly am unable to "QUIT" Mail. Also, When I try to "Quit" the mail messages disappear, and yet the Mail Menu Banner remains across the top of the screen. If I go "Window" and click on the dropdown "message viewer" all the emails are displayed again.

But, the biggest problem is I CANNOT shut down my Mac, because Mail is still open. Any thoughts?

Mail is stuck retrieving or waiting for the server to respond.

Press Command (⌘) + Option (⌥) + ESC = Force Quit Applications if you are unwilling to wait for the process to complete at your own risk. ⚠️
