Robotic voice with Airpods Pro microphone on Macbook Pro

I am having trouble with the microphone of the AirPods Pro with magsafe when using my MacBook Pro.

I have been using the Airpods for over a month now and have had some troubles with video conversations via my MacBook Pro 13" 2020 four Thunderbolt 3 ports.  I have had multiple encounters where the microphone of my Airpods would turn my voice into a robotic one. Where it was sometimes possible to understand some parts and sometimes people would be completely clueless. This is quite frustrating in the current work from home situation. The situation only occurs with my MacBook, when I use the Airpods with my ios devices it works fine.

In other posts on several forums, I have seen several ways to "fix" it. I have seen the following:

  1. Reconnect Airpods with the Bluetooth connection.
  2. Reset your AirPods: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209463
  3. Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
  4. How to reset the SMC of your Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Number 3 did the trick for me for quite some time, but the issue has returned! I have also used the 4th which also worked for a while, but after closing the laptop and opening it up again I have a robot voice again.

I have also read that my bluetooth logitech mx keyboard and mouse might be a problem?

What is going on here?

I have the same issue with the Airpods 3rd Gen, using the same peripheries (with MX Keys and Master), however when I use my Bose 700 there is no issue at all, I think apple might need to introduce an update to solve that since the issue seems to be only with Airpods

I have the same issue (robo voice) with the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) and Mac OS Monterey ver. 12.3.1. and mouse Logitech MX Master 2S and AirPods Pro.

I strongly believe that the laptop for 3000+$ and AirPods Pro for 270$ should not have baby problems like this. Shame on Apple!

For instance, the same equipment works well from scratch with Dell or HP laptops.

P.S. turning off the mouse helps.

First of all thanks Judysings!

Next up my conclusion:

Okay, so I figured it out. Whether it is a problem of Logitech or Apple I still don't know. But I also got the same problem with my windows machine. It turns out, that my Logitech MX master and my keys were interrupting the Bluetooth signal of my AirPods. One could argue that Logitech is the one who should not be interfering the signal, but on the other hand, one could argue that the AirPods signal should not be able to be interrupted. So I think it is up to the Logitech and Apple engineers to decide.

To solve my problem, I found out that just turning my MX devices off would remove the interruption/distortion of my voice. But as I want to be able to use all of them, I needed a workaround. I found the Logitech unifying USB drive in the box of my MX keys, and read on a forum that using the Logitech unifying ecosystem would solve my problem. So here I am using the frequency of the Logitech unify system and it seems to be working well. I hope this also solves someone else's problem and am looking forward to being able to use Bluetooth again, which is a bit easier.

Good afternoon PepijnGriff,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you are having issues with a robotic sound generated from the AirPods Pro mic on your MacBook Pro 13", and we'd like to help.

Have you tried unpairing the Bluetooth Logitech MX keyboard and mouse to see if that makes any difference with videochats?

Which software are you using for your video conferencing? If you use more than one (ie. FaceTime vs. Zoom), does the issue occur in every app?

You may need to reach out to Apple directly to address this issue:

Take care.

Hi Judysings,

Thank you for welcoming me! I have noticed that turning my mx keyboard and mouse off makes my voice sound normal again. So thank you for that :) I still need to unpair them to see if that has any results. If unpairing doesn't work, I can't just turn them off every time I have a video call. Could there be another solution?

I use Microsoft teams most of the time. But I have also had problems in the voice memos app, so I think it is a Bluetooth problem and not app specific.

I will share an update once I have unpaired them.

Thanks!

Hi PepijnGriff,

Glad to see turning off the Logitech MX keyboard and mouse resolves the issue of the robotic voice for you. Let us know what happens if you unpair them and try a different mouse and keyboard. Would be helpful to know what your experience is using other video conferencing apps like FaceTime or Zoom as well. Hopefully you will be able to isolate what the root cause of this issue is. Keep us posted!

Enjoy your day!

My Airpods Pro actually fell within a group of Airpods that could be serviced via Apple for having audio issues. I send in my Airpods wondering if the service would help to clear up the robotic voice on recording and zoom calls etc. I was pretty disappointed when I got my Airpods back only to discover the robotic issue persisted. I'm so thankful I found this thread, because honestly, I never even thought to check for a conflict between the two devices (yes, yes, I know this should be standard issue resolve for two bluetooth devices lol). It's 2022 and I'm just out here thinking bluetooth conflicts are a thing of the past. Using the unifying USB along with my KVM is allowing me to finally use my Airpod Pros as a mic for zoom calls and other recordings if I so choose. Thank you @PepijnGriff for posting your workaround.

I have just confirmed that I have the same issue. The issue only exists with my AirPods Pros and not my 2nd generation AirPods. Therefore, given that the issues seems isolated to use with the AirPods Pros, I think this is an issue that must be solved by Apple. $250 is a lot to waste. I'm on and off calls all day doing paired programming with junior devs so this simply won't work and I may just need to return these.

I've exact the same issue with my Airpods Max (and now Airpods Pro as well). It's been bugging me for a long time.

It started when I bought the Airpods Max last year. Sound via the Airpods Max mic is robotic. In Teams calls I switch to the Macbook Pro 2020 Mic.

Strange thing is that it used to work fine with Airpods Pro, but recently that changed.

I can confirm that when I switch off the Logitech MX the sound is fine. (Thanks @PepijnGriff !)

Somewhere along the way the bluetooth drivers possibly changed?

A fix would be very much appreciated :-)

I'm am having the same issue with my M1 MacMini and my AirPod Max. It's exactly the same issue everyone is reporting in this thread and the same work around fixes the problem. But for me the USB unifying key is buggy and my mouse and keyboard aren't smooth. I now remember switching them to bluetooth awhile ago because of that problem and that was around the same time I started having a problem with the Airpods. I never thought of the issues being related.

I don't like that this thread says it's solved with a work around, I would rather it be marked as solved when it's actually fixed by Apple or Logitech.

How can we escalate it?

The reason I like Apple so much is that things "just work together". These issues brings me back to my Windows days.

I have this problem, too. This seems to be a widespread issue, and there's another thread in Logitech support about it.

This is my setup:

2019 16" MBP running Monterey

AirPods Pro 2019

MX Master 3

MX Master Keys

My workaround is the Logitech unifying receiver, but since I have to use an adapter with it, it's not the low-profile solution that it was designed to be.

Hoping that Apple will work on this problem with Logitech.
