If you have the mid 2012, it can handle up to16 GB - I had the same model and went with a total of 12 GB. Here is the link to the install videos:

I also replaced the slow original hard drive with an SSD; in case you want to do that, also replace the cable holding it as it can break easily.

OWC may be a source if your computer RAM can be upgraded. If it is a retina display MacBook Pro the RAM can not be changed.

I think it will take 16 GB RAM but confirm with OWC.

My 2011 MBP has 16 GB (2 x 8GB). But, as BobTheFisherman suggest, verify first.
