iPad and SMS

I just got a new iPad. Set it up from iCloud backup. Can’t seem to send SMS from this device to my son who has a Samsung phone. Didn’t have that problem with the iPad I replaced. What’s going on?

The only way for an iPad to send a message to a non-iOS device (SMS) is to have Text message forwarding setup and configured on your iPhone. The iPad is not capable of sending SMS/MMS. You need to set that up on your iPhone for your iPad to use it to send SMS/MMS. How to forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your iPad, iPod touch or Mac - Apple Support
