Can't find photos transferred on new MAC
how do I upgrade to Photos on my new Mac? transferred from old where I had the iPhoto app. And where are my transferred pictures?

Assuming you transferred the iPhoto Library from the old machine then Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library you moved from the old machine. It will do the rest.

Thank you - holding the alt did nothing but I went to launchpad and clicked photos and saw them so I can go thru there if needed. Would still like to have the icon on the toolbar but nothing is coming up. But at least I found them!!
After you launch it in launch pad, click and hold on the icon in the dock and you should get the option to "Keep in Dock"
Though I am confused by what you describe.
