iPad not restoring

I have tried to restore my iPad to factory settings because the device was disabled from too many password tries. I am holding the home button while simultaneously inserting the usb cable into my laptop with iTunes open. It does ask if I want to restore. I click this, and then it opens a screen option to restore and update or cancel. I click the “restore and update” and then it takes longer than 15 minutes and nothing happens. The screen just goes back to disabled and I’ve tried this 5 times now! Help!
