We're glad you thought to ask Apple Support Communities about the issue you're having with using your iPad as a second display for your Mac, but only seeing it mirror your Mac. To extend the Mac desktop, you open the Display menu or AirpLay menu while connected to your iPad and choose the option to extend the display instead of mirror.
