The operation can’t be completed because the item xxx-xxxx is in use"

I've been unable to delete empty folders in Finder for several months and I receive this error message "The operation can’t be completed because the item xxx-xxxx is in use". I can delete the folder contents, but the empty folder that remains after deleting the content can't be deleted.

I tried the sudo command that several have suggested, but that's not working.

Any suggestions?

There are some previous post that have proven helpful for others. operation cannot be completed because the item...is in use

As well as third-party steps to help if you're comfortable with them. Prior to completing any third-party steps be sure you have a backup of your information. Can’t delete a file on macOS because it’s ‘In Use’? Try this!

We'd also recommend testing removing the contents when booted to safe mode. How to use safe mode on your Mac

Should the issue remain, reach out to Apple Support directly to further assist.
