why did apple charge me $42 for simply updating my card??? what the heck???

Apple didn’t charge you anything for updating your card. Apple will place a temporary hold when you update a card to verify that the card is valid, but it is not a charge and it will disappear after a couple of days. It is normally $1 USD. Any charge for a different amount was a purchase. Here is a one-stop link for billing questions→Subscriptions and Billing - Official Apple Support. You can review your purchase history, cancel a subscription and request refunds.
