The disk showing top R is different - it must be the parent of the one I've become used to;
System Preferences displays a red ball with a 1 in it yet following the update path merely
re-displays the process over again without updating

Did Sys Prefs>iCloud>iCloud drive get turned on?
If you mean did I sign out of my Apple ID then back in again - and, yes I did get a
new ID - and confirmed it on appleid.com when the one before kept
getting rejected.
My desktop items are plainly visible in my home folder but I haven’t tried to move them.
Where did my Desktop files go?
