From my experimentation a Conditional Highlighting rule overrides the format setting. Even though for negative numbers I've selected bracketed red text from the dropdown under the Cell tab (you won't find that choice in a "menu bar") the text is not red, as you can see in this screenshot:

That is because I have this Conditional Highlighting rule:

When I delete that Conditional Highlighting rule I get this:

If you want both red text AND yellow background then you can try a Custom Style under Conditional Highlighting like this:'

To find Custom Style you need to scroll down in the dropdown, as shown here:

Hi Frank,

Version number of Numbers might be useful.

Red text for negative numbers is a setting available in the Cell section of the format inspector.

Select the column (or the cell, if only that cell should be displaying positive and negative number values)displaying the issue, then click the format brush to open the inspector.

In the inspector, choose Cell.

Your settings should look similar to this example:

Just going to the Cell tab doesn't do the trick for me. There's another step (unless I'm missing something)."

Actually, there are two red settings for negative numbers—with or without parentheses.
I chose the top one as Frank had specified "red text", and would see both on clicking the menu bar.

Not sure I follow the bit about "clicking the menu bar."

When you 'activate a dropdown' or 'click a menu bar' the action opens the single item 'bar' and shows a list of menu choices—in this case, a list of four ways to display a negative numbers.

If you examine our examples above, you'll notice two differences:

  • the background colour of the document (not significant)
  • The Negative numbers menu is open in yours, and shows the four available formats.

The same menu is closed in mine, and shows the chosen format (red text) chosen from that menu.

Other than that, the significant items (for this question) are identical on the two images.

Slight difference in the vocabulary used, but we're both offering (a that point) essentially the same solution.

Barry

In my speadsheet I use many formulas. My problem is there are cells with formulas that WON’T follow the cell instructions which are part of Cell Formatting for “Number” selection in the drop down box under the Paint Brush icon on the menu bar. Here you can select how negative numbers are shown in red or red with brackets. I chose the latter but the cells with these formulas (shown directly under the yellow cell with Neg number in it wont respond to the format. So how to solve this is my question. Maybe this is a better explanation of the issue. The (50.99) cell is formatted for text to turn red with brackets when formula produces a negative but you can see it hasn’t changed. Now I've tried numerous fixes including adding a Highlight rule to the cell with no luck. Any suggestions ? Thanks
