iMessage won’t let me record voice messages. I can receive and play them, but not record and send them. The record button freezes.
I have restarted iMessage and hard rebooted my phone and it still doesn’t work.
My microphone works as I can record voice messages in WhatsApp.

I found out the issue and completely fixed it. The 'Sound Recognition' setting was 'on' in control center. If you switch it off, voice messages work again.

For this issue in particular, since it's dealing with an app that can't be readily removed from your iPhone; the best option from here is to just make sure your iPhone is up to date: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
