Yes, it's a gen-1. And to answer my own question, yes the Apple retail store did replace the battery in my little SE this morning. I still don't understand why Best Buy, as an authorized repair dealer, was not being supplied batteries for this phone. However, I'm beginning to suspect that it was Best Buy's policy to keep their inventory down, and then blamed the shortage on Apple. Never know the truth, really. Thanks for responding.

Not sure exactly what the deal is with any kind of inventory. I can't even find real-time inventory at an Apple Store. I asked about whether or not I could get a battery for my Mac. They only looked it up and told me that the part was still available, but then said that the only way I would find out if they had parts in stock or how long it would take would be to have an appointment for installation and then find out. But I think they could have referred me to another Apple Store with inventory if I came in with an appointment first.
And there are oddball things out there, like no listing for any iPhone 6 or 6 Plus service or battery repair, even though older models are listed, and it's categorized as "vintage" by Apple meaning that at least some stores should have repair availability.
You're referring to the 1st generation version?
It's still listed for full device "repair" which is really just replacement. Other than that, battery service doesn't seem to be specifically listed.
