music dividing into multiple albums

I know this has been discussed before, but I was not able to find an answer why it happens and a permanent fix so it does not happen in the future.

I am very diligent in being sure that my tagging is correct. I tag an album showing album, artist, track number, song, title, & album artist.

When I am done, everything is fine and shows up as one album. Then some time in the future, I may look at my album view and there are 2 or more albums appearing. Clicking on any one of them will show that it is not complete as it has been divided. To fix it, I will go to the particular albums that are listed one on top of the other, highlight all songs and then delete the album artist ( which is the same as the artist) and all shows up properly.

At some time in the future, the same thing may happen, but not usually. But other albums that have been fine for a long time, show up as multiples. Something is happening and I just do not know why. And it does not happen to all of them. I have several thousand albums on my iMac. They are a combination of ripped Cd's , downloaded music and iTunes purchases. I always be sure tags are correct when downloading before closing the music app.

Why is this and what is a real permanent fix?

If iTunes or Music show multiple instances of an artist or an album then what generally works is to select all related tracks and use Song Info to add say a trailing X to each of the fields that the tracks should have in common:

  • For an album; Album, Album Artist, and Artist (if artist is the same for all tracks) *
  • For an artist; Album Artist (and Artist unless there are guest/featured artists listed which should not be changed)

Apply the change which merges things together, then remove the excess characters. Occasionally it may help to close and reopen the application between the two renaming operations. Part of a compilation should also be set consistently.

* If tracks are to be synced to a non-iOS device there should be a common Artist and/or the album should be set as a Compilation.

Use the songs view and display the fields Album, Sort Album, Album Artist, Sort Album Artist, Artist and Sort Artist side by side so you see whether or not it is appropriate to edit Artist and if sort values could be causing any further problems. See Grouping tracks into albums for more help if required.

One further tip for really stubborn duplicates. At one point I had three lots of Various Artists in the artists view of my library that wouldn't respond to the usual trailing X treatment. What I found worked was to add the trailing X to start with, but then with each group that the application wanted to keep separate start typing a value and use the autocomplete from say Var... to Various Artists. Picking from the autocomplete lists seemed to work when pasting/editing the whole value didn't.

Thank you. But in the meantime I put music into album view and scrolled from top to bottom. In doing so, I found about 15 albums that were split. It was easy to do because of the artwork. As I mentioned, I was able to combine them by deleting the album artist, all of which were the same as the artist. But a few of them did not have album artist as I believe that I had deleted album artist when these particular ones split before. So by adding album artist, they combined and now all of my albums are no longer split.

The question is what causes it to happen at a later time? And what if anything can be done to eliminate it from happening? Only time will tell if it will happen to an album that I fixed or to others that have been fine for a long time.

This is very frustrating. I am using an M1 iMac but it happened on my intel based iMac before as well. It happened with iTunes as well as Music. I keep my computers up to date with the latest OS and apps.

I am not sure I understand about the trailing x. As I stated, once I delete the album artist, all is fine again and I do not believe, though not sure, that it happens again to that particular album. What I do not understand is why it happens since I am the one who puts in the album artist at the same time I verify the tagging before closing the app.

I do not use iTunes( Music ) to synch to my iPhone or iPad, as I use Waltr2 to drag and drop which works well and I do not have to deal with synching.

It seems to be a bug in the software. Occasionally it will happen on import, but I think it is more common when you make a change that if you did it one track at a time would create two different groups that then merge back into one when you do the last edit. Its as if having increased the number of albums, artists, album artists, etc. it doesn't want to decrease them again. If you go through all of the advice in my earlier post when you run across a broken album then the album shouldn't break up again.
