I found a solution by just shutting off message and phone notifications to the watch entirely in the Watch app on the phone. I switched the settings to Custom and Notifications Off. Now my phone rings for both phone and messages and I can respond on my watch if I desire. My issue was I’m deaf in one ear and significant loss in the other so I need the extra volume of the phone.

Hello there Gus2259,

Thanks for posting here on the Apple Support Communities! This is a place where other Apple users can submit questions or respond to others to help lend a hand. Let's take a closer look as we do our best to provide some additional insight.

From the resource link at the top of this page, you can try disabling Notifications for Messages so they only show on your iPhone. In the Watch app go to Notifications > Messages > Custom, and try disabling Messages notifications just for your Apple Watch.

We hope this helps get you pointed in the right direction. You can also provide feedback directly to Apple at: Apple - Product Feedback

Take care.

Thank you for this, but what if we just wanted to make it so our Apple Watch doesn't notify us when our phone is unlocked. Maybe it's a software thing for right now (iOS 15.3, WatchOS 8.4.1), but whenever my phone is in my hand omne of 2 things happen:

1) I have the phone unlocked, the message is open, and I'll get the notification on my watch first, before the message shows up in the chat. Or,

2) I'll get notified of a message on my phone, read said message and reply, and still get a notification on my watch.

(Note: I have notifications on watch set to "Mirror my iPhone")

Thanks in advance
