Tennis Elbow??

I love my iPad. But, all dirty jokes aside, has anyone else developed a sore elbow? I hold it with my left hand, and interact with my right, which is why the stress is only in my right elbow. Probably from holding it so closely and using the muscles around the bent elbow more than usual.

I'm not complaining, I can adjust. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this?

iPad 64GB, iPhone 3G, Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 4 GBs of ram

I have the same thing. I noticed it about 6 months ago when using my smartphone touchscreen, I would hold the phone with my left hand and control and type with my right. At the beginning when using it a lot my right elbow hurt pretty bad. I am a physician and suspected it was tennis elbow and blamed it on holding my infant daughter on that side. Didn't connect it to the smartphone at first. Now I hold it with my right hand and control with my thumb. Prevents the repeated wrist extension that causes the outer elbow to become inflamed and over-used. I'm noticing the same thing with my ipad. I've been sitting here using my ipad for the past 30 to 45 minutes and the pain began to flare up in my right elbow again. It had been gone for quite some time. Definitely a repetitive strain type injury from the wrist extension. Who would have thought???

Hi,

I have a tennis elbow too after using a lot my iPad 2. I never had tennis elbow before even if I play tennis since 40 years. I just play some games and typing some texts and I develop a tennis elbow. I can't do nothing since one week now. I stop to using my iPad 2 and I fell better now. I think i will never touch an iPad in the futur because is the second time that it's hurt my elbow or my wrist.

Have a good day.

You are not alone! I have noticed that holding a constant V with the arm causes the veins to squeeze at the elbow. For me, the sensation is similar to the numbing effect of getting your blood drawn.

Take breaks and change positions and you will feel much better!

With the frequent use of portable devices today, I foresee a rise in physical therapists. *Hint hint to those of you just entering college. ;-)

I thought I was the only one that had this problem. It took me a while to figure it out. I was using the 64 gig iPad and moved to a 16 gig. It's solved the problem by not lifting so much memory at one time. Just kidding.

I've been having this problem for some time, I only just started thinking it is my iPad. I will start putting it on my lap, stop holding it so types my body, and try to use voice recognition software even more. I will report back on how this works. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks for your help Apple community.

Hi! My pain is in my left elbow. I have developed a habit of holding it with my left had, typing and swiping with my right. It started in June or July. Got progressively worse. I had a steroid shot in September. The pain from that was worse, but my elbow got better. Yes, I stopped holding it that way. A couple of weeks ago, being pain free, I forgot about not holding it. Now the pain is back! I don't want another steroid injection! So I'm using an elbow band; it does help the resting pain and reminds me to be careful. I also have stopped hold the ipad, again.

This may sound hard to believe, but I've had some luck with getting over the tennis elbow using the same technique I used several years back to recover from a carpal tunnel syndrome-type injury. It was from reading stuff written by a guy named Dr. Sarno and his book "The Mind-body Prescription". He connects RSI injuries to certain high stress personality-types... Dogooders and perfectionists..... and his theories are a little extreme but thousands have had great success with recovery from following his ideas. Stuff about Dr. Sarno and recovering using his methods are easy to find online for free and his books are in libraries. Others, more recently, have tried to explain why his treatments work.... They say that when someone is under stress, or tense and intense, their muscles contract. As they go about repetitive activities for long periods, soft tissue injuries where muscle meets joint, and along the connected tendons, etc, will result. The injuries last and worsen as the same conditions are continued. When I had my previous wrist problems, they were so bad that I couldn't use my hands long term even though I was in physical therapy and was resting them (not using the computer). But then it just went away within a month of reading his stuff. It was really strange.

I have the same problem. I have an iPad keyboard/stand so typing isn't the issue; it's holding my right arm at an angle and raised to swipe that is the problem. The pain started in my right shoulder, now is also in my elbow and it's to the point I can barely hold up a glass to drink.

I can't lay the iPad flat since I need to type on the keyboard. I have tried holding my elbow close to the body, this seems to help somewhat, but basically I'm crippled right now!

I am a freelance writer and editor on a computer at least 8 hours/day. Ironically, I have tendinitis in my wrists and got the iPad to give myself a break from typing on my desktop keyboard all day, but now it's causing even worse problems than my keyboard ever did.

What are the stretches people are referring to and what kind of band are you guys using on the elbow? Thanks for any suggestions.
