iMac randomly turning off.

Alright. So I've taken my iMac into the Apple Store SEVERAL times. The first time I took it in was in March and the power supply was replaced. I JUST took it back a few weeks ago because it went off and refused to go back on.

So they determined they needed to keep it and open it up to look inside. I was told there was nothing wrong with it and it went back on normally.

So a few weeks later it's randomly shutting off for absolutely no reason. It goes back on, but just today within a three hour span it's turned itself off twice.

I'm at my wits end. I really would rather NOT drive another 45 minutes to the apple store, just for them to tell me there's NOTHING wrong with it - when CLEARLY there has to be.

Somebody, for the love of all that is holy, tell me you've had this problem/you have a solution. I love my iMac to death, I love Apple to death, but this is getting a bit ridiculous.

Hahaha I confused myself with that one too. Sorry. It hasn't gone off in another outlet, but I don't know if that's enough to warrant it being the outlet I currently have it plugged in to. I've since moved it to another outlet in my room and I'll keep it there to see if it does anything.

However, when it decided to stay off the third time it's gone off today, it wouldn't turn on in any other outlet. It only decided to go on when I tapped it.

Sorry for the confusion.

Every computer (whether it be Windows or Mac based) contain internal heat sensors. If its internals get "too hot", the system suddenly shuts down. If one of these sensors is "too sensitive", one's computer will perform an Auto-Shut down. As a suggestion, install 3rd party utility to monitor its internal heat temps. See if there's a "pattern" and if you can identify if an over sensitive sensor is the root cause.

A good program to install is iState Menus @ http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/istatmenus.html

Good luck...

I don't know if you've solved this... I had the same problem and I believe it's an overheating issue. I have a 27" imac i7 with 16 GB RAM. I read elsewhere that some people thought that non-Apple RAM was the cause of the problem, but I have Apple RAM installed. Anyway, there's another useful thread and I've installed both the temperature widget and a fan speed control app. See this post that "Jack99" put with links to the free software. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2573309&tstart=75

It's only been a day, but it's working for me. good luck
