You can alter the volume using the physical volume buttons on the right hand edge of the iPad chassis (as viewed in portrait orientation, with the physical Home Button at the bottom of the screen) - or by using the Control Centre.
To expose the Control Centre, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen - then use the volume slider.
