It sounds like your contacts were placed into groups. We understand how important this is to you and we are here to help.
If you are syncing your contacts with iCloud, this article should help: Create and manage groups of contacts on iCloud.com
If you are contacts are being synced with another account, you would have to edit your groups using that accounts webpage.
You can verify which accounts are syncing your contacts by going to: Use other contact accounts on iPhone
