bookmark icons do not appear when opening safari. In the search box, it says "blank page."

I am trying to trouble shoot an iMac desk top with OS X 10.7.5.

  1. When I open Safari, none of the Bookmark icons appear, and in the search box it say "blank page." I can go to the Bookmark category and tap "Show Bookmarks," and I get a sidebar which shows all the saved Bookmarks. When I close the sidebar, it goes back to a blank page, with no icons. How do I get the icons to appear?
  2. When I go to "Help" and type in a category, it says I am not connected to the Internet (yes, I am) and to try later. This happens to any help category I type in the search box.

Are these indicators of something more serious?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.6

Hi Paul Douglas,

Wondering if the iMac with MacOS X Lion 10.7.5 ever had the supplemental update (link below)

and whether it would make any difference.

OS X Lion 10.7.5 Supplemental Update

Or

Whether it is possible to update the iMac to a newer MacOS

Identify your iMac model

https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201634

Seems:

iMacs introduced in late 2015 or later can be updated to Mac OS Monterey

iMacs 2014 upwards can be updated to macOS Big Sur 11.6

iMacs from 2012 to 2013 can be updated to macOS Catalina 10.15.7

Also:

There's an online Safari guide that may have answers,

however the earliest Mac OS that can be chosen (at the top of articles) is Mac OS Mojave 10.14

All the best :-)

Thank you for the information. Your links were informative and actually directed me to other sources. Bottom line: the iMac is too old to upgrade as is, unless I invest in more RAM or the upgraded OS X system would not work properly. Even then, other internal components may also need replacing/upgrading. Who knows what they would find once they opened the computer. It is my brother's computer and although disappointed, he at least has an answer to his problems and possible options. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond and guide me in the right direction.
