Shattered Lens Cover iPhone 12 Pro Max

Just got back from the Genius Bar at the Apple Store. i “somehow” 🥲 shattered the Lens cover of my 2.5 Power Camera. The cameras work until I go to the higher power and the there is a distortion from the jagged edges of the the shattered lens cover. I’ve had iPhones since 2005 and have always been super careful but “stuff” happens and it happened to me. I’ve never bought an extended warranty since I keep my phones for a long time. I was told by a “genius” that it would cost me over $400 because the cameras are a one piece assembly. Anyone have a a similar situation that comes with a better solution?

Apple will only do that as a complete replacement of the case, and in many cases . They consider the entire case to be a single part that's only up to their standards if assembled at the factory.

It's technically possible to just replace the lens cover, which is actually sapphire laid over glass. But none of the jobs I've seen look so great and none I've seen use anything close to Apple's sapphire laid glass. And at that point Apple may not consider it eligible for their repair service. However, if it's broken they may also not consider it eligible for their repair service.

Unfortunately, if you didn’t get AppleCare, you’ll either have to pay $400 for the repair or just not use the higher zoom camera. I can’t make that decision for you, but if you think that the repair is worth it, you’ll have to pay full price. Sorry.
