What happens when you try to update your Apple ID settings? Is there an error message? Are you using the steps from Manage Apple ID settings on iPhone?

If you don't use a passcode on your iPhone, setting one might help. Check out Use a passcode with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch for guidance if needed.
