how can I check out a used iPhone 11 pro max without connecting it to our wifi or computers? I just want to verify its working condition, etc? It wants to immediately start integrating itself and I want to check battery and functionality first; any thoughts?

Not sure what you mean by "integrating itself". But if it was correctly restored and prepared to be setup by a new user, you would see the Hello screen, from which you can start set up. This indicates it's working enough to start setup.

You cannot access the Settings App to check Battery Health however until it's set up, but starting the first few steps of the setup should provide a good idea of wether it's working right or not, ff the touch screen responds correctly and in general is in working condition.

Did you completely set it up? Did you go through all the setup steps here: link-> Set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

You cannot access camera or Settings unless you completely set it up and it takes a while. It snot something you can do in a minute or 2.

If you did not have to do all the steps in the link above, then it was not correctly cleared for sale. If it was sitting at a Home Screen or requesting a passcode it was not correctly wiped for sale.

Please be clear of what you did and what you see on the iPhone.

Thank you both for your quick responses; after Phil's first response I went ahead and began to set up the phone from the Hello screen; then before inserting my sim card, I was running through the functionality aspects, battery health, etc, and discovered the camera glitch. And so yes, I have contacted the seller to see if he can convince me not to void the deal, which is doubtful.

Again, many thanks for y'all's experience and insights.

No, it was not at a Home Screen nor asking for a passcode upon first waking it up; Yes, I started with the 'Hello' screen and followed the directions on the phone to set it up, (my first query to you was trying to ascertain if I needed to set it up in order to check its functions, which you resolved for me that 'Yes, I needed to set it up') and yes it did take some time, Apple ID, etc to get it up and going. Then I was able to check the battery, and had begun to run through the other features when I realized the camera was glitchy. I have still not put a sim card in it (so couldn't check the phone functions), but am assuming that a lack of sim shouldn't have any impact on (some, not all of) the camera features?

If you think that might be the case I can certainly insert a sim card, I'm just nervous about exposing anymore of my info onto an as yet unproven device.

The only hitch I may have introduced was perhaps interrupting the data transfer from an old phone as I was trying to set it up manually and I had inadvertently started with the wrong 'old phone'. I know I'll need to do a clean wipe , ie, Factory Reset before returning it, and could also try to set it up again more carefully and see if that 'cures' the camera glitch, or just let it go and start over with another device.

I've contacted the seller who has readily agreed to a refund;

Thanks again for your help in working through this all.
