Disposal of Apple Watch 1 with swollen battery

From the things I have read, I am realizing that I am basically out of luck with my Apple Watch Series 1, even though the battery expanded the watch face off within the last 6 months.

I’m spite of my frustration, I realize that my only choice is to buy a new version Apple Watch.

My question is: how do I responsibly dispose of this Watch with a swollen battery? One of my sons said that it is a potential fire danger and shouldn’t be in my house, nor should it be just thrown in the garbage can. Any suggestions?
