AirTag in very high temperatures

We have a model 1 Prius, especially rich in the precious metals that thieves love to steal. our catalytic converter was stolen by burglars which cost our insurance company $2,500. We don’t want to repeat the experience.

Can an AirTag withstand the heat of an automobile exhaust system or, is there a way to rig the AirTag so it can be protected above its temperature range in that environment?

Directly from Apple specifications for the AirTags:

Environmental Requirements

  • Operating ambient temperature: −4° to 140° F (−20° to 60° C)

So, if you plan on placing one in/on the catalytic converter, that would certainly exceed the high end of the operating temperature range. When it comes to some type of shielding, it would, most likely, make it impossible for the AirTag to send a signal ... especially coupled with being inside the converter.
