Is the sound from the microphone muffled or is it completely gone?

If it's muffled, try gently cleaning all of the ports on the AirPods and remove any pocket lint and other debris that may be blocking the sound from getting in.

If the AirPods are not able to record at all, then that is more likely a hardware issue that could possibly be fixed by apple support.
