Crucial MX500 install

Just ordered a Crucial MX500 500gb SSD to replace the HD on my late 2011 MBP High Sierra 10.13.6 OS. I also ordered a SATA cable to do a clone transfer. A couple of questions. Which format should I use on the new SSD, APFS or Mac OS Journaled? Both are mentioned in my limited research. Second question is should I use Target Disk Mode to do the transfer? I will also add some electrical tape to protect the internal cable. I'm not an expert but I'm pretty confident (for a 75 year old) I can do this. Anything else I should be aware of before I begin? A new Mac is on the horizon but I'll still use my wonderful 2011. Thanks all.

Call OWC (macsales.com) and get a new internal drive cable as well. Spinny drives grind down drive cable contacts and the new drive may not be detected.

Use the correct format for the OS you are transferring. I actually recommend CarbonCopyCloner (bombich.com) which will format/copy by itself from internal to new. Then use CCC to keep backups current because it incrementally copies new/changed files like TM. The CCC clone is also bootable. (CCC changes behavior significantly for making bootable clones in Monterey, but leave that matter until you can run Monterey)

BTW: Crucial MX500 is available off-the-shelf at Best Buy these days, at least near me.
