Time Machine "The selected network backup disk does not support the required capabilities"

Even though the remote drive is configured with a Mac Share and that share and its contents can be see on the network under Finder, Time Machine cannot see the share for backups and gives the above feedback after trying to "Select Backup Disc ..."
