MacBook asks for pin

After recently updating my MacBook Air, I’ve noticed that instead of asking for a password, I’m asked for a pin. The only way I can avoid putting in this pin, which I don’t know, is to switch to the other guest user and then back to mine. Anyone having this problem? My fiancé is dealing with the same thing after updating his older MacBook Air.

Hello Thompson2400,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. Upon review of your post, it seems that you want to know why you are prompted for a Mac PIN rather than your password. We can see why you’d want this clarified, so let us help from here! There are a few different PINs your Mac could ask you for. Please take a look at this article: If your Mac doesn't start up all the way. Check the section that says: “System lock PIN code”. If that is what you are seeing, that section explains why you are seeing it.

Please let us know if you have follow up questions or if you are being asked for a different PIN, so we can continue assisting. Take care!
