Based on Personal Experience:

My AirPods 2nd version worked just fine with my former iPhone 6. Being a little more recent, than the first version, you should consider using the same:

• Proceed from there as necessary

As you can see from the “What you need” section here, only first or second generation AirPods can work with this >7 year old iPhone.
