Is it true that to hear Spatial Audio tracks on Mac, I need to download the files?

I am listening to the 'Made for Spatial Audio' playlist from Apple onon the 2021 MBP with the M1 Pro chip. My AirPods Pro say "Spatial Audio Not Available" (but it is available if I watch something from the Apple TV+ section in the Apple TV app).

I feel like when Spatial audio launched last year and I was still using a 2020 MBP, I could listen to tracks and toggle between Spatial/Dolby and normal, and could hear the difference. Now to enable spatial, I have to download the tracks to my computer? Feels like something is off...
