Control Eject on previous Macs, now with no eject key - Shutdown dialog on new Mac / MacBook Pro shortcut
Control Eject on previous Macs, now with no eject key on newer macs I've found a fix. It allows you to quickly shortcut key a shutdown or restart via two seperate easy key shortcuts (it doesn't bring up the dialog box to choose one, but does take you straight to Shut Down or Restart). Works great!
In System Preferences on Mac, go to keyboard > shortcuts > app shortcuts
Add a new one under the app Finder using the + button
Add Application: Finder > Menu Title: Shut Down... > Key used: control ` (control / key above it).
Also add: Finder > Menu Title: Restart... > Key used: control option ` (control / key above it / option).
Simply keypress either of the above combinations and the shutdown or restart dialog will appear; follow either of them up with a return key press immediately to action either immediately also (no need to use the mouse). ie:
control ` .....then..... return key (Mac will Shut Down).
control option ` ......then..... return key (Mac will Restart).
This will solve the problem, works on Macs, Macbook Pros and iMacs etc. Easy to remember as instead of control eject (with no eject key anymore), its control and the key above it (`) which youd more commonly use. Then say you had an issue or wanted to restart to mac its the same but the option key is added into the mix. I think that's easy to remember, as when I am finished for the day I Shut Down (standard)... If I had a glitch on the Mac or say I'd updated some software, I'd restart it. So the same shortcut applies, but with the option key pressed simultaneously also. IMO it's an easy to remember as rather than Shut Down I want the option to restart the Mac (less commonly used).
Hope that helps and the thinking behind it for ease of shortcut key memory... either way, it works and doesn't conflict with other shortcut keys!
